The UConn Huskies and UMass Minutemen have rescheduled a previously canceled football game for the 2029 season, FBSchedules.com has learned.
Back in 2022, UConn and UMass extended their football series through the 2027 season. However, one contest, a scheduled tilt at UConn on November 29, 2025, was not played due to UMass rejoining the Mid-American Conference.
The two schools have moved to reschedule that game, according to a copy of a contract amendment obtained from the University of Connecticut via a state public records request. Per the amendment, UConn will host UMass on August 25, 2029 at Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field.
Two UConn-UMass games that were part of the contract extension remain unaffected. UConn is scheduled to host UMass in East Hartford this season on Friday, October 23 before traveling to face the Minutemen next fall on October 16, 2027 at McGuirk Alumni Stadium in Amherst, Mass.
UConn and UMass have met 78 times on the gridiron in a series that began in 1897. The Huskies have won three consecutive games, including a 47-42 result in their most recent meeting in 2024, which evened the series at 38-38-2.
With UMass added, UConn now has eight opponents slated for the 2029 season. Other opponents include Wyoming, Duke, Boston College, and Southern Miss at home, with Purdue, Rutgers, and Buffalo on the road.
UConn becomes the fourth non-conference opponent added to UMass’ 2029 slate, which will undergo more changes as the MAC will be shifting to a nine-game conference schedule in 2028. Currently, the Minutemen are slated to visit UCF on Aug. 30 while hosting Bryant on Sept. 8 and Temple on Sept. 29.

When UConn joined the Big East for non-football sports 6 years ago, the American said they didn’t want to keep them for football only – which was hypocritical given Navy’s football-only status at the time, since joined by Army.
Is there any talk of the MAC inviting Connecticut for football only
It would be a good idea on UConn’s end. As an independent, they have virtually no shot at a CFP bid because their schedules are too weak.
As a MAC member, UConn can potentially get the G6 autobid.
They could Z Man, but very doubtful. The MAC is the bottom of the barrel……but would be good for scheduling of course, but I can’t see a MAC school getting that G6 berth.

It’s going to be harder for all schools. That’s one of the reasons the MAC is going to a 9 game conference schedule.
Well, if the CFP expanded to 32 teams – if they want more than 16, 32 would be the way to go since it still eliminates first-round byes, which have done more harm than good, completely – I could see all 10 FBS conferences get autobids to the CFP, just like almost every FCS conference gets an autobid to that tournament.
Connecticut is quite happy and content with basketball (recent men’s national championships in 2023 and 2024 with the women’s most recent in 2025) and all their non-revenue sports in the Big East. Only an invitation from a Power-4 conference would facilitate their leaving the Big East and forgoing an independent playing football team.
Which is why I would consider football only membership in the MAC a stopgap measure until that P4 invite does come along.
Similar, Sac State should stay in the MAC until either the MW or Pac-12 come calling.
The fit of UConn playing only football in the MAC is a very bad financial and poor strategic decision for either side. For you to continue to push this outcome makes no sense – both would lose money and UConn would put the stability of the Big East under tidal destructive forces.
It actually makes more sense than the Cleveland Browns abandoning their current stadium after only 30 years when they played in the old Municipal Stadium for 50. Making matters worse is that the Browns have never hosted a playoff game at the venue, nor will it ever host a Super Bowl after 63 was awarded to Las Vegas, which should not be in any hurry to host another one as 63 will come only 5 years after the first one there, 58.
Therefore, the current Browns stadium is in danger of closing without ever hosting a playoff game. Because of that, I have come out against stadiums being replaced before they have a chance to outlive their predecessors. Like for instance, the Atlanta Braves played 31 seasons at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, but only 20 at Turner Field – 20 isn’t even 2/3 of 31. This is a dangerous trend and needs to stop with the new Browns and Broncos stadiums.
