The Louisville Cardinals have adjusted the date of their 2027 home game against the Richmond Spiders, moving the matchup to the season‑opener, FBSchedules.com has learned.
Louisville was previously slated to host Richmond on September 11, 2027, a game that was announced in 2022. According to an amendment to the contract obtained from the University of Louisville via a state open records request, the contest has been shifted to the season opener and will now be played on August 28, 2027, at L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium in Louisville, Ky.
Louisville and Richmond have only met once previously in football. The Cardinals defeated the Spiders in that contest, 35-0, which was played on October 16, 1982 in Louisville.
The date changes for both contests stem from the NCAA’s June vote to implement a uniform 14‑week regular season beginning in fall 2027. Under the updated model, FBS programs will be allowed to start most seasons in what is commonly referred to as Week Zero—the weekend before Labor Day—and finish the schedule the week after Thanksgiving.
Louisville is scheduled to open the 2026 season on Sunday, September 6 against Ole Miss in the inaugural Liberty Mutual Music City Kickoff at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tenn. The game will be broadcast by ABC at 7:30pm ET / 6:30pm CT.
