Portland State cancels San Jose State, adds Idaho to 2027 football schedule

The Portland State Vikings have made an adjustment to their 2027 football schedule, canceling their trip to San Jose State and replacing it with a fellow Big Sky program.

Portland State was previously scheduled to travel to face the San Jose State Spartans on September 18, 2027 at CEFCU Stadium in San Jose, Calif. The game, which was scheduled in 2019, would have earned Portland State a $450,000 guarantee payment.

According to a copy of the termination agreement between the two schools that was obtained from Portland State University, Portland State and San Jose State have mutually agreed to cancel the game. Additionally, the Vikings agreed to pay the Spartans $100,000 for the cancellation.

As a replacement for San Jose State, Portland State has added a road contest against fellow Big Sky Conference member Idaho, with the game scheduled for Sept. 18, 2027 at the Kibbie Dome in Moscow, Idaho. The Vandals will pay the Vikings a $210,000 guarantee for the game, per the copy of the contract.

Last week, we reported that Portland State added a road contest against the Washington Huskies. The Vikings will receive a $600,000 guarantee for that game.

Portland State is also tentatively scheduled to visit Oregon State on Sept. 4, 2027 for a $500,000 guarantee. The Vikings, who were set to receive a $450,000 guarantee from San Jose State, will now receive a total of $1,310,000 in guarantee payments next fall.

The Big Sky Conference has not yet announced the league opponents for the 2027 season. Portland State plays four home and five road games in 2026, so in 2027 the Vikings should host five league opponents while visiting four.
