The Youngstown State Penguins and the Sam Houston State Bearkats have scheduled a home-and-home football series for 2025 and 2027, FBSchedules.com has learned.

A copy of the game contract was obtained from Youngstown State University via a state of Ohio open records request.

In the first game of the series, Youngstown State will travel to take on Sam Houston State at Bowers Stadium in Huntsville, Texas, on Aug. 30, 2025. The Penguins will host the Bearkats two seasons later at Stambaugh Stadium in Youngstown, Ohio, on Sept. 4, 2027, which will conclude the series.

Provide the two schools don’t get matched up in the FCS Playoffs, the 2025 contest between Youngstown State and Sam Houston State will mark their first-ever meeting on the gridiron.

Youngstown State now has two non-conference opponents scheduled for both the 2025 and 2027 seasons. The Penguins are also scheduled to play at Michigan State on Sept. 6, 2025 and at Maryland on Sept. 11, 2027.

Sam Houston State now has two non-conference opponents set for their 2025 schedule. The Bearkats are also scheduled to play at Southeast Missouri that season on Sept. 13, which is the second game of a home-and-home series that begins at Stambaugh Stadium in 2021.

Youngstown State is the first non-conference opponent scheduled for Sam Houston State in 2027.

The Penguins will not play a fall football season in 2020 due to the Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC) postponing competition to the spring. MVFC members can still play their non-conference contests in the fall at their own discretion.

Sam Houston State, a member of the Southland Conference, is still set to play this fall as the conference has not yet postponed their season. The Bearkats have had home games against Tarleton State and Mississippi Valley State canceled due to the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.
