Western Carolina adds seven opponents to future football schedules

The Western Carolina Catamounts have added future football games against Oklahoma, Arkansas, Wake Forest, Gardner-Webb, Charleston Southern, Campbell, and Montana, FBSchedules.com has learned.

Copies of contracts for games with all seven opponents were obtained from Western Carolina University via a state public records request.

Below are the details for each Western Carolina opponent, according to the copies of the contracts:

Oklahoma

Western Carolina will travel to play the Oklahoma Sooners at Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in Norman on Sept. 11, 2021. The Catamounts will receive a $625,000 guarantee for the game.

The 2021 contest between Western Carolina and Oklahoma will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools on the gridiron.

Arkansas

Western Carolina and Arkansas will meet for the first time ever in a season-opening contest on Sept. 2, 2023 at Donald W. Reynolds Stadium in Fayetteville. Arkansas will pay WCU a $550,000 guarantee, per the contract copy.

Wake Forest

The Catamounts will take on the Wake Forest Demon Deacons at BB&T Field in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on Sept. 6, 2025. Wake will pay WCU a $425,000 guarantee.

Western Carolina and Wake Forest have met three times on the gridiron and the Demon Deacons hold a 3-0 record in the series.

Gardner-Webb

Western Carolina and Gardner-Webb will play a home-and-home series in 2020 and 2021. The two schools have met each season since 2016 and are scheduled to play this season at WCU.

The Catamounts will host GWU at E.J. Whitmire Stadium in Cullowhee, North Carolina, on Nov. 7 2020 and will travel to face the Runnin’ Bulldogs at Ernest W. Spangler Stadium in Boiling Springs, North Carolina, on Sept. 25, 2021.

Charleston Southern

Western Carolina and Charleston Southern will begin a home-and-home series at Buccaneer Field in North Charleston, South Carolina, on Sept. 3, 2022. WCU will then host CSU in Cullowhee the following season on Sept. 23, 2023.

The 2022 contest between Western Carolina and Charleston Southern will be their first-ever meeting on the gridiron.

Campbell

Western Carolina and Campbell will play a home-and-home series. The two-game set will kick off on Sept. 7, 2024 in Cullowhee and conclude on Sept. 27, 2025 at Barker-Lane Stadium in Buies Creek, North Carolina.

Campbell and Western Carolina’s only two meetings came back in 1936 and 1939. The Camels won both contests.

Montana

WCU and Montana will begin a home-and-home series at Washington-Grizzly Stadium in Missoula on Sept. 14, 2024. The series will then shift to Cullowhee on Aug. 30, 2025.

Western Carolina and Montana have never met on the gridiron.
