WAC releases revised 2022 football schedule

By Kevin Kelley -

The Western Athletic Conference (WAC) has released a revised 2022 football schedule following the change in membership of two schools.

The Lamar Cardinals joined the WAC in 2021, but were set to return to the Southland Conference in 2023. However, the school opted to depart the WAC one year early.

Additionally, the UIW Cardinals were set to join the WAC this season, but they backed out at the last minute and will remain in the Southland Conference.

As a result of those two moves, the WAC had to update its football schedule for the fall 2022 season. Football-playing members in 2022 will include Abilene Christian, Sam Houston, Southern Utah, Stephen F. Austin, Tarleton State, and Utah Tech.

“I applaud the leadership of our committed institutions for working together to create a schedule that generates competitive matchups throughout the season” said WAC Commissioner Brian Thornton. “Now more than ever, I believe that our league is in a position of strength with the group of institutions that share the ideals of cohesiveness and collegiality while working towards a unified mission.”

As part of the schedule changes, two games between WAC members were added but will be considered non-conference contests:

  • Abilene Christian at Stephen F. Austin – Oct. 8
  • Southern Utah at Utah Tech – Nov. 5

Also included in the release are the addition of three non-conference games:

  • Warner at Stephen F. Austin – Sept. 24
  • Southwest Baptist at Tarleton State – Oct. 22
  • Lincoln (CA) at Southern Utah – Nov. 12

All WAC home games will be broadcast on ESPN+ this season.

I know, It’s the 2022 Season.
2022 sets the Stage for who will be eligible for the 24 Team Playoff in 2023.
With the 2 Team departures to 1-A Level & many Teams transitioning from Division 2 & per NCAA Bylaws not allowed to compete in the regular Season for the Playoffs, there will be 95 eligible Teams whose Conferences automatically are working to qualify as many Teams for the Playoffs as possible. The SouthWest Athletic Conference allows it’s Champion to compete in the Playoff after the Exhibition celebration bowl or Not compete in the 24 Team Playoff.
