USF at Florida Atlantic football game postponed due to novel coronavirus

By Kevin Kelley -

The USF Bulls at Florida Atlantic Owls football game this weekend has been postponed, both schools have announced.

The USF-Florida Atlantic game was postponed due to issues surrounding the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. USF played Notre Dame this past weekend, and seven Fighting Irish players tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday.

USF and Florida Atlantic will attempt to reschedule the contest later this season.

“With the health and safety of our student-athletes and staff as well as mitigating the spread of the virus as our primary concern, given the outbreak among team members of our most recent opponent and subsequent contract tracing within our team, postponement of this Saturday’s game at FAU is the right thing to do,” USF Vice President of Athletics Michael Kelly said. “We were aware going into this season and have seen across the country that dealing with COVID-19 and taking the necessary precautions to mitigate its spread will present ongoing challenges. We are prepared to deal with those challenges and move forward in a safe manner. We will resume on-field team activities once our medical professionals are comfortable with us doing so and will work in good faith with FAU to identify a future date to reschedule the game.”

USF opened the 2020 season with a 27-6 win over The Citadel Bulldogs at home on Saturday, Sept. 12. The following week on Sept. 19, USF lost at Notre Dame, 52-0.

Florida Atlantic has not yet played a game this season. The Owls postponed their season-opening game at Georgia Southern on Sept. 19. due to contact tracing issues within their own program.

USF and Florida Atlantic do not currently share any open dates where they can reschedule their contest.
