UCLA ascends to fifth in Week 10 college football rankings

By Kevin Kelley -

College football’s Week 10 rankings are in, and the UCLA Bruins have climbed into the top five of both major polls following another dominant performance.

UCLA (8-0) improved to 8-0 with a 27-0 shutout of Nevada on Saturday, extending its unbeaten start and jumping two spots to No. 5 in both the AP Poll and Coaches Poll.

At the top, Miami continues to hold firm. The Hurricanes (8-0) survived a scare on the road against North Carolina, escaping with a 38-35 victory to remain one of the nation’s three undefeated teams. The win keeps Miami entrenched at No. 1 in both national polls.

The upper tier of the AP rankings also saw movement elsewhere, with Georgia (7-1) rising to No. 2, unbeaten Utah climbing to No. 3, and Notre Dame (7-1) moving up to No. 4.

USC (7-2) authored the week’s biggest surge, vaulting from unranked to No. 18 after a statement 30-18 victory over then-No. 2 Ohio State. The Trojans recorded the largest jump of any team in the rankings, while the Buckeyes (6-2) suffered the steepest fall, dropping nine spots. Florida (5-3) also took a significant hit, sliding eight places to No. 25 following its rivalry loss to Georgia.

Further down the poll, SMU, Northwestern, Oklahoma State, and Wisconsin were all knocked out of the AP Top 25 after suffering weekend defeats. Their exits cleared the way for Iowa, New Mexico (first ranking ever), and South Carolina to join the rankings as new entrants heading into Week 10.
