Miami (Ohio), James Madison, and UConn have made contact with the American Athletic Conference in an effort to explore potential membership, according to a Friday report from On3’s Brett McMurphy and Pete Nakos.
Miami currently competes in the Mid-American Conference, James Madison in the Sun Belt, and UConn as an FBS Independent — a status that has long fueled speculation about its future conference home.
Following the report, the American responded with a firm stance on stability rather than expansion.
“As the landscape of college sports continues to evolve competitively, legislatively and legally, the American Conference remains focused on driving innovation and helping shape key decisions and opportunities for our member institutions, student-athletes and the industry,” the league said. “The American is not proactively seeking additional members. We will continue to evaluate the changing landscape and opportunities that strengthen the conference and support our collective mission.”
Miami and UConn have not issued public statements, but James Madison reiterated its commitment to evaluating all avenues for growth.
“We strive every day for excellence and to best position our student-athletes and university,” JMU said. “Our charge is to evaluate every opportunity to make JMU Athletics the best it can be now and moving forward.”
The American’s current football membership includes Army, Charlotte, East Carolina, Florida Atlantic, Memphis, Navy, North Texas, Rice, Temple, Tulane, Tulsa, UAB, USF, and UTSA.

Update: the American has declined their invitation:

There is a statement from the American in the article.
Miami being declined in particular is good. The Battle of the Bricks is one of the best G6 rivalries. Would hate to see that go away.
Not adding JMU isn’t smart. Big public university sells out every game and is good at football and not to mention their other sports every year. Also not adding Miami isn’t smart. They’re offering 40 million to the conference, have a yearly rivalry with Power 4 Cincinnati, and building a 250 million dollar arena for their elite basketball team. Which the American needs. Not adding UConn is the only thing that’s makes sense.
14 is plenty for the American, but if the ACC wants to get back to an even number of teams, and looks to the American for THAT… well.
The American may not need any more football members, but they should add a non-football school to make the number of football and basketball members the same, with CAA member College of Charleston being my pick.
🥴
It looks like all the talk of conference movement slowing down until the P4’s decide what college sports is going to be is in play here. Can’t read much more into it than that.
UConn would be okay IF and only IF they come (back) into the conference in all sports, but I really don’t see them taking their basketball teams out of the Big East.
They would only leave the Big East for a P4 league.
If you read the story in the link, that is exactly what Connecticut wants. Why would they leave the Big East for other sports? That’s up to whatever conference they eventually end up with in football. They’re not getting into a P4 regardless, that’s just one of many Z-Man dreams.
These 3 teams will be in the restructured ACC in three years. Miami, Clemson, North Carolina, Florida State, SMU, Cal and Stanford will all be bolting the conference when the media rights agreement ends in 2029, leaving the ACC desperate for more teams.
Where are Miami, Clemson, UNC, FSU, SMU, Cal and Stanford going to go? The first four of those having been rumored to be looking to leave the ACC for several years. There have been no takers. And SMU, Cal and Stanford only ended up in the ACC after the Pac 12 broke up because they had nowhere else to go then
Yeah, uh, NO! Even if that happens that any of the mentioned teams leaves the ACC, none of these three are going to move to a P4. Did you consult with Z-Man on a realignment plan?
It won’t be long before the NCAA bleeds out, then we will finally know what it will all look like.
I am highly confident that ACC will be around beyond 2029.
Dave, SMU was not part of the Pac 12 collapse, as they paid a hefty price to join the ACC.
I don’t understand why Miami would want to leave. They’ve been in the MAC forever, the MAC is the tightest geographicicaly conference in all of college sports, and most importantly I can’t believe the money they would get from moving to the American would be at all higher.5
Why did Northern Illinois leave?
Looking to join a better conference would be at the top of the list. The MAC is like an advanced FCS at this point. They replaced NIU with an FCS team no one else wanted (including the FCS) just to prove it.
