The Citadel Bulldogs have added the Eastern Kentucky Colonels to their 2020 football schedule, it was announced on Wednesday.
The Citadel will host Eastern Kentucky at Johnson Hagood Stadium in Charleston, S.C., on Saturday, Sept. 26. The game will mark the first-ever meeting between The Citadel of the Southern Conference and Eastern Kentucky of the Ohio Valley Conference.
Both schools had their conference competition postponed due to the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) and are going to proceed with a limited non-conference schedule this fall.
Earlier on Wednesday, it was officially announced that The Citadel will travel to take on the Clemson Tigers on Sept. 19, 2020. The game as originally scheduled for Nov. 14, but was moved up to accommodate Clemson’s revised football schedule.
“We are very excited to have the opportunity to compete against a program like Clemson,” said The Citadel director of athletics Mike Capaccio. “This offers our cadet-athletes a chance to be on the field with a National Championship team. We are also very happy to have EKU coming to The Citadel and appreciate them working with us on this game. Finding games is very difficult with our conference making the decision to move to the spring last week.”
Eastern Kentucky now has three non-conference games scheduled for 2020. The Colonels are scheduled to open the season at Marshall on Sept. 5 before traveling to play West Virginia on Sept. 12.
“We are excited to add a quality, top-25 ranked Football Championship Subdivision team like The Citadel to our 2020 season,” Eastern Kentucky Director of Athletics Matt Roan said. “This is an outstanding opportunity for our student-athletes to compete against a championship-caliber opponent, and a destination for our fans to travel with the Colonels. As a leading military-friendly university, we also appreciate the fact that The Citadel is a senior military college.”
