The Rice Owls have added the Texas Southern Tigers to their 2021 football schedule, the school announced on Tuesday.

Rice will host Texas Southern at Rice Stadium in Houston on Sept. 25, 2021. The game will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools on the gridiron.

Texas Southern and Rice, both located in Houston, are separated by only 3.2 miles. Texas Southern is a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).

The addition of Texas Southern tentatively completes Rice’s non-conference schedule for the 2021 season. The Owls are scheduled to open the season at the Oklahoma State Cowboys on Sept. 4.

Rice is also slated to host the Houston Cougars on Sept. 11 and travel to face the Texas Longhorns on Sept. 18.

The Owls open the 2018 season in Week Zero on Saturday, Aug. 25 when they host the Prairie View A&M Panthers at Rice Stadium.
