The Notre Dame Fighting Irish have dropped the Arizona State Sun Devils from their 2014 football schedule, ESPN has reported.
Notre Dame is scheduled to visit Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe on October 25, 2014. The game is part of a series with Arizona State which begins this season on Oct. 5 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington.
The cancellation is not official yet, and as far as Arizona State is concerned, they are still set to host the Irish per their official statement:
”As far as Arizona State University is concerned we still have a valid contract with the University of Notre Dame to play football in 2014. We look forward to hosting them at Sun Devil Stadium.”
Notre Dame has agreed to play five ACC members per year beginning in 2014, so it’s reasonable to assume they may need to drop the ASU game. The Irish’s 2014 schedule currently consists of 11 games, two of which are ACC teams that were previously scheduled (Pittsburgh and Syracuse).
If the Irish still play those two, they only need three more ACC opponents. That leaves Notre Dame with the need to cancel or postpone two games to get to 12.
Notre Dame’s 2014 schedule currently includes home games against Rice, Michigan, Purdue, Stanford, Pittsburgh, and Northwestern and road games at Syracuse (at MetLife Stadium), Temple, Arizona State, Navy, and USC.
As for Arizona State, the loss of Notre Dame would cripple their 2014 non-conference slate. In addition to hosting Notre Dame, the Sun Devils are currently scheduled to host Weber State on Sept. 6 and travel to New Mexico on Sept. 13.
Any word on likely ACC replacements?
Nothing yet. Just message board rumors.
Sounds like ASU isn’t going to give up this game without a hefty buyout
Is it too late for ASU to drop the away game this year at Notre Dame?
Probably, it’s at Cowboys Stadium. Jerry Jones might get a little upset.
Jerry Jones is a TOTAL ‘TARD.
Conference realignment is getting me confused. Are there any charts y’all have showing which teams are moving conferences in which years?
We don’t have a chart, but these pages show how each conference will look each season through 2015:
Would love to see ASU keep ND on the schedule. But if they back out, bring on BYU. They are Indy, have a name, live on ESPN and they only have 10 games in 2014.
I think Boise State needs a game in 2014 as well. That would be a good home and home to set up…
Boise is scheduling weaker opponents after they picked up Florida State in 2019-2020. Look at their new series with Troy and La/Lafayette. This year they have UT Martin and Southern Miss. They also signed up UConn and Virginia. They want weaker teams to pad their W/L records Arizona State must be a little too much for their current philosophy. It would be agreat series.
Why reward BYU. They pulled out of a committment with ASU a few years ago, as did Oklahoma and San Jose St. This needs to stop.
As an ASU Fan, I wish that were true, but it was on us. I have heard from multiple people in Tempe that it was the Sun Devils that backed out of the home and home. BYU wanted to continue the series and even wanted to do a multi year series like they are doing with BSU. If you have a link showing otherwise please post it. Not sure on Oklahoma and SJSU, But we got out of the BYU deal.
More like the “fleeing Irish” instead of the fighting Irish
Rice and NW drop.
Norte Dame can’t afford a loss to ASU. It would look bad to see them get whooped two years in a row. Can’t blame them for being cowards, the writing is on the wall for them.
Wow Fork’em, you really look like an ASU IDIOT to be counting your wins before they happen! Looks like you clowns will be lucky not to see ND again since we kicked your ass in Texas rather easily and you wouldn’t want two losses in a row to show the world that you are just pretenders with big mouths!!!! How bad does it look now? …LMAO!
Hey Anthony, what bowl game is Notre Dame going to again? I can’t remember the name of it. And 3 points isn’t “rather easily.” That was a game ASU should have won. Any team that loses to Pitt that beats us is a huge disappointment.
