The Notre Dame Fighting Irish have added the Central Michigan Chippewas to their 2023 football schedule, it was announced on Thursday.

Notre Dame will host Central Michigan at Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Ind., on Saturday, Sept. 16, 2023. The game will mark the first-ever meeting between the two schools on the gridiron.

Notre Dame, a Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) Independent, now has 11 games scheduled for the 2023 season. Other opponents scheduled to visit South Bend in 2023 include Ohio State (Sept. 23), USC (Oct. 14), Wake Forest (Oct. 28), Navy (Nov. 11), and Pitt (date TBA).

The Fighting Irish are scheduled to travel to face Clemson (Nov. 4), Stanford (Nov. 25), Duke (date TBA), Louisville (date TBA), and NC State (date TBA) during the 2023 season.

“I am thrilled for our student-athletes to be able to play on a national stage at this iconic venue,” CMU Associate Vice President/Director of Athletics Amy Folan said. “Playing such a storied football program, coached by former CMU Head Coach Brian Kelly, will allow us to engage and celebrate with our CMU family and showcase all the great things happening here at Central Michigan University.”

With the addition of Notre Dame, Central Michigan has completed their 2023 non-conference schedule. The Chippewas are slated to open the season at Michigan State on Sept. 2. CMU is also scheduled to host New Hampshire on Sept. 9 and play at South Alabama on Sept. 23.

“This is an exciting match-up for our players, university, alumni and fan base,” CMU Head Coach Jim McElwain said. “It is an opportunity to compete against one of the legendary programs in college football.”
