The Northern Colorado Bears and the Abilene Christian Wildcats have scheduled a home-and-home football series for 2023 and 2024, FBSchedules.com has learned.
A copy of the athletic contest agreement was obtained from the University of Northern Colorado via a state public records request.
In the first game of the series, Northern Colorado will travel to face Abilene Christian at Wildcat Stadium in Abilene, Texas, on Sept. 2, 2023. The series will conclude the following season on Sept. 14, 2024 when the Bears host the Wildcats at Nottingham Field in Greeley, Colo.
Northern Colorado plays in the Big Sky Conference while Abilene Christian competes in the Southland Conference, both in the Football Championship (FCS) Subdivision.
Northern Colorado and Abilene Christian first met in 1916 and have squared off a total of 17 times on the gridiron. The Bears won the last four meetings, most recently in 1991, but still trail in the overall series 6-10-1.
Abilene Christian is the third scheduled non-conference opponent for Northern Colorado for both the 2023 and 2024 seasons. The Bears’ 2023 slate also includes games at home against Incarnate Word on Sept. 9 and at Washington State on Sept. 16.
In 2024, Northern Colorado is scheduled to visit both Incarnate Word (Aug. 31) and Colorado State (Sept. 7). FCS teams can schedule an additional non-conference opponent in 2024 due to the football-playing period having one additional week that season.
The Wildcats also have three scheduled non-conference opponents for 2023 and 2024. Abilene Christian is scheduled to play at Prairie View A&M (Sept. 9) and Texas A&M (Nov. 18) in 2023 and at Texas Tech (Aug. 31) and New Mexico State (Nov. 23) in 2024.
