North Texas at UAB football game canceled, may be rescheduled

By Kevin Kelley -

The North Texas Mean Green at UAB Blazers football game has been canceled due to COVID-19, both schools announced on Thursday.

The two schools were scheduled to meet at Legion Field in Birmingham, Ala., on Saturday, Nov. 14. The game was canceled due to “…the number of COVID-19 cases and subsequent contact tracing within the UAB program.”

“We are disappointed for our student-athletes that we won’t be playing our football game Saturday at UAB, especially since we were finally healthy and excited to get back to playing,” North Texas Vice President and Director of Athletics Wren Baker said. “We understand the situation that UAB is in and we know that they are making this decision based on the health and safety of their student-athletes. We appreciate the communication with UAB and we look forward to hosting Rice next weekend.”

Although the game was canceled, it may be rescheduled.

There remains a possibility to reschedule and the schools will work with the league office in that instance.

North Texas’ next scheduled game is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 21 at home against the Rice Owls. The game is scheduled for 2:00pm ET with streaming via ESPN3.

“Although it is disappointing we cannot play this weekend, the health and safety of our student-athletes, coaches, staff and fans is the most important factor in our decision,” said UAB Director of Athletics Mark Ingram. “These are unprecedented times and we appreciate the patience of our fan base as we navigate this situation together.”

UAB is next scheduled to play on Friday, Nov. 20 against the UTEP Miners. The game, originally scheduled to be played at Sun Bowl Stadium in El Paso, Texas, was moved to Grande Communications Stadium in Midland, Texas. The contest will be streamed via ESPN+ at Noon ET.
