By Kevin Kelley -

The New Mexico State Aggies and the Akron Zips have scheduled a home-and-home football series for 2020 and 2022, both schools announced on Thursday.

New Mexico State will host Akron in the first game of the series at Aggie Memorial Stadium in Las Cruces on Sept. 12, 2020. The Aggies will travel to take on the Zips two seasons later at InfoCision Stadium on Oct. 1, 2022.

In their first and only meeting on the gridiron back in 1988, Akron defeated New Mexico State 52-7 in Las Cruces.

New Mexico State, which competes as an independent, now has 10 games scheduled in 2020. The Aggies are scheduled to open the 2020 season at UCLA on Aug. 29 and later travel to UTEP (Sept. 26), Hawaii (Oct. 10), Fresno State (Oct. 17), UMass (Nov. 7), and Florida (Nov. 21).

Home contests for NMSU in 2020 currently include Akron (Sept. 12), New Mexico (Sept. 19), Texas State (Oct. 3), and Louisiana (Oct. 24).

The addition of New Mexico State tentatively completes Akron’s 2020 non-conference football schedule. Other games scheduled that season include Youngstown State (Sept. 5) and UMass (Oct. 17) at home and Clemson (Sept. 19) on the road.

New Mexico State is scheduled to open the 2019 season on Saturday, Aug. 31 at Washington State. Akron is slated to open the 2019 season at Illinois on the same date.
