By Kevin Kelley -

New Orleans BowlLouisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns have received their first ever bowl bid at the FBS level, the school announced today. The Cajuns will play in the 2011 R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl.

The game will be played on Saturday, December 17, 2011 at 9:00 p.m. ET at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana (ESPN and ESPN 3D). The Cajuns will be the first ever school from Louisiana to play in the bowl game.

Louisiana-Lafayette is slated to face the 2nd through sixth seed from Conference USA. But the opposing team could come from another conference if C-USA can’t provide a bowl eligible team.

Since joining Division I back in 1974, the Ragin’ Cajuns have never played in a bowl game. Their only winning record during that span was 6-5 in 2005.

Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns are currently 8-3 overall and 6-2 in Sun Belt Conference play. They close out the 2011 regular season on Saturday with a non-conference game at Arizona.

Cajuns have always been Division 1. They are the only Sunbelt program that has never been FCS or Division 1 – AA.
