Jackson State, Southern set non-conference football game in Spring 2021

By Kevin Kelley -

The Jackson State Tigers and the Southern Jaguars will play a non-conference football game in Spring 2021, both schools announced on Monday.

Jackson State and Southern are both members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) in the Football Championship Subdivision. The SWAC postponed their fall football season to spring and has already announced their full schedule, which includes six conference games and one non-conference game per school.

Rather than search for a non-conference opponent outside the conference, Jackson State and Southern will instead play each other in a game that won’t count in the SWAC standings. Jackson State will host Southern at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium in Jackson, Miss., on Saturday, April 3, 2021.

“We are very excited to add Southern to our spring 2021 football schedule,” said JSU Vice President and Director of Athletics Ashley Robinson. “We now have four home games. Our student-athletes, fans, and supporters are going to enjoy our completed spring schedule.”

Jackson State and Southern have met 65 times on the gridiron. Southern has won seven consecutive contests in the series and currently holds a 36-29 advantage.

“We want to thank JSU Athletics Director Ashley Robinson for re-engaging us when we decided as a conference on spring football without the benefit of having our yearly scheduled contest,” said SU Athletics Director Roman Banks. “We are excited to continue this important rivalry, especially for our student-athletes and fans.”

Jackson State opens their spring schedule on Saturday, Feb. 27 at home against the Mississippi State Delta Devils. Southern begins their spring campaign one day prior on Friday, Feb. 26 on the road against the Alabama State Hornets.
