Houston adds future football series vs. Rice and UTSA

By Kevin Kelley -

The Houston Cougars have added future football series against the Rice Owls and the UTSA Roadrunners, the schools announced today.

Houston and Rice will play a home-and-home football series in 2020 and 2021. The Cougars will host Rice at TDECU Stadium on Sept. 5, 2020 and will then travel to take on the Owls at Rice Stadium on Sept. 11, 2021.

The Cougars and the Owls, separated by only five miles, first met on the gridiron in 1971 and have played 40 times. Houston leads the “Bayou Bucket” series 29-11 and has won three straight.

Houston and Rice are already scheduled to meet on Sept. 16, 2017 at TDECU Stadium, and Sept. 1, 2018 at Rice Stadium.

Houston and UTSA have scheduled a four-game series that kicks off at the Alamodome in San Antonio on Sept 2, 2017. The Cougars will host the Roadrunners at TDECU Stadium on Sept. 23, 2022 and again on Aug. 31, 2024, and the two will meet at the Alamodome on Sept. 2, 2023.

The Cougars and Roadrunners first met in a home-and-home series in 2013 and 2014. Houston won the first game 59-28 in San Antonio, and then the Roadrunners won the next game 27-7 in Houston.

The addition of UTSA completes the non-conference schedule for Houston in 2017. The Cougars are also slated to visit Arizona (Sept. 9) and host Rice (Sept. 16) and Texas Tech (Sept. 23).

UTSA has also completed their non-conference schedule in 2017. The Roadrunners also host Southern (Sept. 16) and travel to Baylor (Sept. 9) and Texas State (Sept. 23).

Glad to see UH-Rice renewed. This should really be an every year game, and ideally at the end of the season.
