The Grambling State Tigers and the Northwestern State Demons will play in Shreveport in 2022, the Monroe News-Star has reported.

Grambling State and Northwestern State will square off at Independence Stadium in Shreveport, La., on September 10, 2022.

Independence Stadium is home to the annual Independence Bowl, which is now sponsored by Radiance Technologies. The stadium has a seating capacity of 49,565.

“This was a game we really wanted,” Grambling State Athletic Director Rusty Ponton said. “(Grambling State head football coach Broderick) Fobbs really wanted to play this game, Northwestern State really wanted to play this game and the Shreveport-Bossier Sports Commission wanted it as well. They helped make it happen.”

Grambling State and Northwestern State first met on the gridiron in 1974 and have played a total of five contests. In their most recent matchup in 2018, Northwestern State defeated Grambling State 34-7, but the Tigers still lead the overall series 3-2.

Grambling State has played at Independence Stadium 18 times in the Red River State Fair Classic from 1947 through 2016. The Tigers are 15-2-1 in those contests and most recently defeated Alabama State 21-0 in 2016.

The addition of Northwestern State is the first known non-conference game for Grambling State in 2022.

Northwestern State now has two non-conference opponents set for the 2022 season. The Demons are scheduled to open the season at Mississippi State on Sept. 3.
