The BYU Cougars and the Virginia Cavaliers have added an additional game and announced changes to their existing future football series.
BYU and Virginia initially scheduled a home-and-home series for 2019 in Charlottesville and 2020 in Provo, and then later the 2020 game in Provo was pushed back to 2023.
According to the announcement today, BYU and Virginia will now meet in Provo in 2021 and in Charlottesville in 2023.
The additional game added to the series will be played at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo on 2025.
BYU and Virginia have met five times on the gridiron. The Cavaliers currently hold a 3-2 advantage in the series.

FBSchedules.com obtained a copy of the contract amendment from the University of Virginia via an FOIA request. Below are the details:
- BYU and Virginia will meet in Provo on Oct. 30, 2021. No guarantee will be paid to the Cavaliers, and there is a $1 million penalty for canceling the game.
- BYU and Virginia will meet in Charlottesville on Sept. 9, 2023. The Cougars will receive a $450,000 guarantee, and there is a $1 million penalty for canceling the game.
- BYU and Virginia will meet in Provo on Nov. 1, 2025. No guarantee will be paid to the Cavaliers, and there is a $1 million penalty for canceling the game.
- Virginia will pay BYU a payment of $250,000 for changes to the original contract and original amendment by July 15, 2016.
In summary, BYU will get two home games and will not have to pay Virginia a guarantee for either game. They will play one game at Virginia and will receive a total of $700,000 from the Cavaliers.

When BYU needed to change 2019 date to make another series work, Virginia moved 2020 road date to 2023 but did not ask for an additional game.
Seems like this may have arisen due to Bronco wanting no game this decade. Surprised BYU got an extra home game out of it (and now the first home game in the series)
Tom Holmoe is taking lessons from the Arizona AD.
Sounds like he should’ve taken lessons from the Colorado State AD, this is pretty much a break-even for Virginia.

I have read unconfirmed speculation elsewhere that Virginia will play the extra game at BYU in lieu of paying Bronco’s $1.2M contract buyout.
Wow….Virginia must have really needed to free up that 2019 slot because they sure paid for that change.
Bronco being the former BYU head coach, he voiced he didn’t want to play some of the guys he coached.
This seems like a really lopsided agreement. BYU gets two home games, UVA one, and BYU does not owe Virginia a guarantee for either home game. The only thing I’m getting out of this is that BYU still thinks they can join a P5 conference, and don’t want to tie themselves down into too many more “guarantee” games.
It’s believed this deal was made in lieu of Virginia paying Bronco Mendenhall’s contract buyout.
