LSU adds four in-state teams to future football schedules

By Kevin Kelley -

The LSU Tigers have added four games to their future non-conference football schedules, and all four contests are against in-state schools, according to an official announcement from LSU Friday.

The Tigers, now led by head coach Lane Kiffin, will face Northwestern State, ULM, Southern, and Tulane between the 2027 and 2030 seasons.

Below are details on all four games added by LSU, including game guarantees via copies of contracts obtained from the school:

Northwestern State Demons

Northwestern State, who competes in the Southland Conference in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), will travel to face LSU at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, La., on August 28, 2027, which is Week Zero that season. The Tigers will pay the Demons a $750,000 guarantee for the game, according to the copy of the contract.

LSU has defeated Northwestern State in all 12 previous meeting, most recently by a 65-14 margin in 2019.

ULM Warhawks

LSU will host ULM in Baton Rouge on August 26, 2028 (Week Zero). The Warhawks will receive a $1.6 million guarantee for the game, per the contract copy.

“We are looking forward to the trip to Baton Rouge and appreciative of LSU hosting us in 2028,” said ULM Director of Athletics SJ Tuohy. “We have many crossover fans in northeast Louisiana who I know will be looking forward to the game. It is incredibly important for our state that our institutions support each other; we also try to be mindful of that when scheduling games, especially with our revenue generating sports.”

LSU and ULM last met in 2021 and have played four contests total, with the 2014 game vacated due to NCAA sanctions. LSU leads the series, 3-0.

Southern Jaguars

Southern, who competes in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) in the FCS, will travel to face LSU at Tiger Stadium on September 9, 2028. The Tigers will pay the Jaguars a $750,000 guarantee for the game, according to the copy of the contract.

In their first and only meeting on the gridiron in 2022, LSU defeated Southern 65-17.

Tulane Green Wave

The Tulane Green Wave will visit Tiger Stadium on August 31, 2030, and will receive a $1.2 million guarantee, according to the copy of the contract.

LSU and Tulane have met 98 times on the gridiron in a series that began back in 1893. However, the two schools haven’t met since a 2009 LSU win in Baton Rouge, 42-0.

LSU has also removed its 2029-30 football series with Arizona State from its official website. We reached out to LSU last week, but they have not yet responded on whether the series will be rescheduled or canceled.

The Battle for the Rag! And good to see Southern back on the schedule. If you’re going to play a bodybag game, may as well do it to a university in your own city.

Telling that they don’t want to play Louisiana Lafayette. Granted that the Cajuns are not a significant threat, but they’d be VERY motivated and if they could pull off a win, we’d never let them live it down. It’s a healthy hate-hate relationship.

It’s curious to me that Tulane is receiving $400,000 less than Louisiana-Monroe receives for a FBS guarantee game. I’d think Tulane could easily out negotiate ULM.
