Am I wrong to be surprised that a school that’s usually an FCS power is taking a road date at a non-scholarship FCS school? Even a good one?
If you’re referring to Northern Iowa, you’re not wrong. But that was part of the home-and-home deal.
Now that was either very shrewd negotiating on St. Thomas’ end or very lousy on Northern Iowa’s end. My guess is it’s a lot more lousy from UNI. Their now ex-AD has left for Tulane and he was an even worse scheduler than his predecessor. Ironically, each of them went to Tulane. Congrats to the Green Wave community. Or should I be saying? Thank you.
I see an open date the weekend before for St. Thomas. Northern Iowa REALLY needs a home game in their non-conference schedule. Opponents are tough to find either of the first two weekends at this point. But I would hope that maybe St. Thomas would be willing to go a week earlier at home with UNI, if it would help the Panthers to secure a non-conference home game. Not that St. Thomas is obligated to in any way.
Yes, a bit surprising. But only a 3 hour bus ride on the road, and they did meet at UNI in 2021, so maybe it was home-and-home agreement.
Peter, do the Pioneer League teams not offer any scholarships?
Dave, no. Pioneer League teams are no scholarships. However, St. Thomas invests in their athletic program in other areas. And apparently, they spend it well. It’s been long speculated that their end goal moving up from Division III was the MVFC. Seems like a long dream, but they are fast tracking better than many expected.
And to respond to Shayn below, they’re not even eligible for the Pioneer League automatic berth to the playoffs for another year or two. But don’t be surprised if they take it immediately upon being eligible.
I would say that it is surprising that a Missouri Valley Conference school would agree to a home and home deal with a Pioneer League team. Given their recent success, maybe a Pioneer League title is in the near future for the Tommies.
