The UTSA Roadrunners have added the Grambling State Tigers and the Texas Southern Tigers to their future football schedules, the school announced on Thursday.
UTSA will host Grambling State at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, on Sept. 19, 2020. The game will mark the first-ever meeting between the two schools in football.
The addition of Grambling State tentatively completes UTSA’s 2020 non-conference schedule. The Roadrunners are scheduled to open the season with back-to-back road games at LSU on Sept. 5 and Texas State on Sept. 12 before hosting Grambling State on Sept. 19 and Memphis on Sept. 26.
The Texas Southern Tigers will travel to take on UTSA at the Alamodome on Sept. 24, 2022. That contest will also be a first-time meeting.
UTSA’s 2022 non-conference schedule is now tentatively complete. The Roadrunners are scheduled to open the season at home against Houston on Sept. 3 before making consecutive road trips to Texas State on Sept. 10 and Texas on Sept. 17.
Grambling State and Texas Southern are both members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).
“With the growth of our football program from its infancy combined with the move into a competitive league like Conference USA, UTSA has reevaluated its overall scheduling philosophy for future non-conference games.” UTSA Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Lisa Campos said. “Non-conference scheduling strategies across all levels of Division I football have changed over the years. Our goal when scheduling non-conference games is to put together a balanced and competitive schedule that best positions our program. Texas is a recruiting hotbed, so we will focus on in-state and regional matchups that give our fans more opportunities to see us play and at the same time place an emphasis on our recruiting efforts.”
UTSA also confirmed today that they will host the Houston Baptist Huskies on Sept. 21, 2024, which we reported last week.
