One of the lasting consequences of the recent wave of major realignment in college football is the loss of long-term rivalries.
Among the costs of conferences bolstering their membership and filling their coffers are the annual meetings between Texas-Texas A&M, Missouri-Kansas, West Virginia-Pitt, and Nebraska-Oklahoma. While truly tragic, these losses also emphasize the value of the long-standing rivalries which still exist at the top level of college football.
With 130 FBS members playing 12 games apiece, approximately 780 matchups (minus FCS games) will take place during the 2019 season. Of these, only 41 – or roughly 5% – will feature a series that has 100-plus previous meetings.
The breakdown by current conference affiliation is SEC vs. SEC (8), Big Ten vs. Big Ten (7), Big 12 vs. Big 12 (7), Pac-12 vs. Pac-12 (7), ACC vs. ACC (6), SEC vs. ACC (2), MWC vs. MWC (1), MWC vs. Independent (1), American vs. Independent (1), and American vs. MAC (1).
Each represents a shared rivalry experience that links the fans of the late 1800’s (when the sport looked more like rugby) to those before the AP poll was installed in 1934, to those in the post-War years, to the BCS era, and to today’s fans in the early years of the College Football Playoff.
No matter how obscure or seemingly undesirable, these matchups are some of the treasures of the sport.
Given that historic sources can vary widely on the statistical data between two programs, we’ve used Sports Reference-College Football as the sole source for purposes of consistency.

Yale and Harvard have met 135 times
FCS was not included.
I know this article refers to FBS teams only, but…….let’s go to the top of the food chain! The MOST played rivalry in college football history (although not the longest) belongs to those Lafayette College Leopards of beautiful Easton, PA…….and those other guys from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA. Due to multiple games played in some years 100+ years back, Lafayette will travel to Lehigh for Game # 155 on Nov. 23, 2019. Lafayette leads the series 78-71-5, including a glorious victory at Yankee Stadium for Game # 150! This dad of a Lafayette alum says…” GO PARDS! “
OK,but, for a lot of those years they were as big and important as anyone. So I am nit picking.
Ohio State and Illinois?
This is not a 2019 matchup. That’s why it’s not on list.
Yo you forgot about the 100th Pitt vs State Penn game.
Hail to Pitt #H2P
Close. She listed those being played this year AND have ALREADY met 100+ times.
They play this year. This is the last game scheduled in the series.
