The NCAA will announce “unprecedented” penalties against Penn State as a result of the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal, according to a report by CBS News. The penalties will be announced at a news conference Monday at 9 a.m. ET.
“I’ve never seen anything like it,” the source told CBS News correspondent Armen Keteyian.
The NCAA said they will levy “corrective and punitive” actions against the school. That likely means the penalties will be a substantial fine in the tens of millions of dollars and actions against the football program, such as a loss of scholarships, bowl ban, TV ban, etc.
CBS’ Dennis Dodd reported today that the penalties could last beyond one season and that Penn State could be “hit with significant penalties by the NCAA that could severely damage the football program’s ability to compete.”
Although there was early speculation that the “Death Penalty” could be applied in this situation, that no longer appears to be the case. SMU is the only school to ever receive the NCAA’s Death Penalty, which bans a school from competing in a sport for at least one year.
At the moment, it doesn’t appear that Penn State will be forced to forfeit any games on their 2012 football schedule. Since the season is only six weeks away, that might unfairly penalize the schools on their schedule. There simply wouldn’t be enough time for those schools to line up replacement games.
If the Nittany Lions are issued a bowl ban, they could also be barred from playing in the Big Ten Championship Game in 2012 and/or future seasons. Penn State would be the second team banned from the 2012 game, as Ohio State is already out of the game after being penalized for violations under former head coach Jim Tressel.
Here is a look at Penn State’s 2012 football schedule:
- 09/01 – Ohio
- 09/08 – at Virginia
- 09/15 – Navy
- 09/22 – Temple
- 09/29 – at Illinois
- 10/06 – Northwestern
- 10/20 – at Iowa
- 10/27 – Ohio State
- 11/03 – at Purdue
- 11/10 – at Nebraska
- 11/17 – Indiana
- 11/24 – Wisconsin
- 12/01 – Big Ten Championship Game
Update (7/23/11): The NCAA has announced sanctions against Penn State, which includes a four-year postseason ban.
The whole thing sucks.
Punish those who made errors in judgement, but spare the innocent.
Trust me, I am not making excuses for the 4 or 5 people who knew better and didn’t do the right thing, but will these sanctions affect those 4 or 5? Probably not.
It is also nice to know that the NCAA can sanction schools for any lapses in judgement that have nothing to do with NCAA regulations.
Yeah. I wondered why the NCAA punished USC long after Reggie Bush had left campus.
In fact, I wonder why the NCAA punishes any school, since the offending parties have invariably moved on by the time the NCAA hands down its punishment.
It is not enough…
What does it mean by Vacate all wins from 1998-2011? And a post-season ban?
It means PSU has a bunch of 0-12 seasons now in the books…….
Penn State must mark all wins from 1998-2011 as losses now in their records. But teams that they lost don’t change their own records.
Post-season ban means no bowls/playoffs. Also can’t play in the B1G Championship Game.
Wern’t they also thinking about suspending the football program for 1 or 2 years?
This is simply wrong. This isn’t an NCAA matter, this is a Law matter. I have been to Penn State for a game this past year, and all the fans were extremely nice and devoted. The NCAA is missing the point here. The PSU community is already horrified and crippled about all of this, they don’t need football taken away. I agree with fining the university millions if not billions of dollars, but the bowl ban and scholarship reductions is crap. Take down everything Paterno but do not punish Bill O’Brien, the students, the players, and the professors. Bill O’Brien is a great dude. I read a great article about his son the other day, and I highly recommend it. They need to fire the whole athletic department and ban all of the football coaches who had knowledge of this. They deserve to be tortured with their own medicine, but Sandusky would probably like that. They should give Sandusky esctasy and viagra and lock him in a room with all of the people who knew. Talk about punishment. I can’t imagine if it came out that Bobby Bowden or Bear Bryant or Woody Hayes had knowledge of rape and how the fans of FSU, Bama, and OSU would feel. Terrible what a sad situation
Penn State has a bowl ban, which means they can’t appear in any post season bowls for 4 years. ALSO a $60 million fine. Also Stripped Joe Paterno wins from 1998-2011. Even Orange Bowl trophy and Postseason awards at during the time. Which means Joe Paterno officially is ranked 8th In all of FBS in Wins. And Bowden is 1# in Most wins. Lastly, they cut mostly half of scholarships for kids coming into the program. And can only carry 15 New Recruits and or scholarships each year. (A little similar to USC)
Thanks.
Wait since they got rid of Ohio State wins in 2010 year and Penn state for past 13 years. WHO WON THE PENN STATE vs OHIO STATE game in 2010?
Ohio state did for real. But now…who knows?!!
officially (as in the record book0 both teams lost.
