Maryland and North Carolina have each added the Old Dominion Monarchs to their 2013 football schedules, ODU has confirmed in separate releases.
Old Dominion will travel to face the Maryland Terrapins on Sept. 7, 2013 and North Carolina Tar Heels on Oct 12, 2013.
The Monarchs have never played a team that was in the Football Bowl Subdivision at the time of the contest. In the past, ODU has faced East Carolina, Miami (FL), and UMass, but all three schools were in a lower division at the time.
Old Dominion will begin transitioning to the FBS in 2013 and will play as an FCS Independent. In 2014, they will become a member of the FBS and will play a full C-USA schedule. The Monarchs will become an official member of C-USA in 2015 and will be eligible to complete in the conference championship game and bowl games.
Maryland now has non-conference games scheduled for 2013 against Old Dominion, at UConn, West Virginia (at Baltimore), and Temple. However, The Washington Post reports that Maryland will face Florida International in 2013, so one of the aforementioned games could be canceled or postponed (likely Temple).
The Tar Heels open the 2013 season at South Carolina and then host East Carolina and Old Dominion. UNC needs one more game to complete their 2013 non-conference schedule.
