The Michigan State Spartans will open the 2022 and 2025 seasons against the Western Michigan Broncos, it was announced on Wednesday.
Michigan State will host Western Michigan at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing on Sept. 3, 2022 and then again three seasons later on Aug. 30, 2025. The Broncos will receive a $1.5 million guarantee for each game, per WMU’s release.
The two schools are also scheduled to meet in East Lansing on Sept. 7, 2019, which was previously announced. WMU will receive $1 million for that contest.
“We are excited to scheduling another series with Michigan State in 2022 and 2025,” said WMU head coach Tim Lester. “We have a great deal of respect for their football program and appreciate what an easy Big Ten road trip this is for our Bronco fans and the greater Kalamazoo community.”
In their most recent matchup in 2017, Michigan State defeated Western Michigan 28-14 in East Lansing. The Spartans currently lead the overall series 13-2 and have won 11 straight.
Michigan State now has two of their three non-conference games scheduled for both the 2022 and 2025 seasons. The Spartans are slated to travel to Boise State on Sept. 17, 2022 and host Boston College on Sept. 20, 2025.
Western Michigan now has two non-conference games scheduled for 2022. After opening at Michigan State, the Broncos are scheduled to host Cincinnati on Sept. 10.
Michigan State is the first announced non-conference opponent for WMU for the 2025 season.
