The San Jose State Spartans will host Portland State in 2016 and Cal Poly in 2017, the San Jose Mercury News has reported.
San Jose State will take on the Portland State Vikings at Spartan Stadium on Sept. 10, 2016. The game will be the first ever meeting between the two schools. Portland State is a member of the Big Sky Conference in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).
The Spartans will open the 2017 season against the Cal Poly Mustangs on Thursday, Aug. 31. San Jose State and Cal Poly, also a member of the Big Sky Conference, have met a total of 15 times dating back to 1923. SJSU leads the series 11-4.
The addition of Portland State completes San Jose State’s non-conference schedule in 2016. The Spartans open the season at Tulsa (Sept. 3), host Portland State (Sept. 10) and Utah (Sept. 17), and travel to Iowa State (Sept. 24).
San Jose State now has three non-conference games scheduled for the 2017 season with the addition of Cal Poly. SJSU is also slated to visit Utah (Sept. 16) and BYU (Oct. 28).
The Spartans open the 2015 season at home against the New Hampshire Wildcats on Thursday, Sept. 3.
The idiots who draw up the schedule give us a great one this year, with four good draws: BYU, Boise State, Fresno State and San Diego State. Next year we only get Utah, and 5 games the casual and walk up attendees will skip, unless the team is ranked.
If they had any brains they’d ask the MWC to rotate Fresno State and San Diego State so that we would get one in State rival a year, and preferably the last week. The schedule is now done as if it was the NFL, in a random order. This is crazy. College is about rivalries, knowing on the 2nd or 3rd week of November you host your hated rival. The MWC has no clue about this. And SJSU doesn’t even try. You have to have that tradition to draw for at least two games when you have a 3-9 squad, and not rely on a 10-2 record to bring fans,
As for playing an FCS, whatever, I’ll accept it if you bring in a quality OOC opponent as well like BYU, a Pac-12 school or an academy. They are mostly doing that, so I’m fine with that. But fix the damn MWC schedule; we need to get SDSU and Fresno in late November every year. This year is fie with Boise and BYU late, but in the future it needs to be the in State duo
If they had any brains, they would kick SJSU out of the MWC.
You got Iowa state too. Big 12. You can win with them Bottom Suckers.
