The New Mexico State Aggies will play at the Minnesota Golden Gophers in 2018 and 2020, FBSchedules.com has learned via a records request to NMSU.
New Mexico State and Minnesota initially signed a contract to play in 2011 and 2016 and then another contract to play in 2013 and 2018. The two ended up meeting in 2011 in Minneapolis, a 28-21 win for the Aggies, and in 2013 in Las Cruces, a 44-21 win for the Gophers.
The 2016 game will not be played, so now they are left with games in 2018 and 2020.
New Mexico State will now travel to take on Minnesota at TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis on Thursday, Aug. 30, 2018 and then again two seasons later on Thursday, Sept. 3, 2020.
The Aggies have also made a change to their 2016 football schedule. New Mexico State was previously scheduled to play at San Diego State on Sept. 24, 2016, but the two schools have agreed to move the game to Sept. 4, 2021.
The postponement of the game at SDSU leaves New Mexico State with three non-conference games for the 2016 season. The Aggies are also scheduled to host New Mexico on Sept. 10 and visit Texas A&M on Oct. 29.
Football Schedules
I thought Minnesota was a middle of the road Big Ten team and here they schedule (or confirm) New Mexico State to their home schedule for both 2018 and 2020. Do the Gophers have something better to offer their season ticket holders in those two years in their non-conference play then New Mexico State and Miami Ohio? No offense (if that’s possible), but New Mexico State has only one winning season (7-5 in ’02) in the last 13 seasons played (40-117, .255 in those 13 years). I think Minnesota can see (or hope, knowing they’ve lost before to NMS) these to be wins. With the Gophers still needing 1 non-conference game for each of those two seasons and still having no P5 games on their NC docket, who are they working with to fill those gaps? With what the B1G is trying to implement across the conference I don’t think this helps the cause.
Since the Big Ten wants their members to stop scheduling FCS teams, this is what fans will see.
Minnesota is no longer allowed to schedule NDSU. Kind of ironic as the Bison are a better team.
Bill. agree with you, it’s is kind of ironic as the Bisons at this time are probable better than at least half of the Power Five Schools. My thoughts are; what is Minnesota going to do when there are no Power Five Schools left to schedule, use an excuse like others and say there weren’t any to schedule with? Poor Planning equals Poor Results.
