The Wake Forest Demon Deacons and the Old Dominion Monarchs have agreed to reschedule their postponed football game in 2020 to the 2023 season, both schools announced on Tuesday.
Old Dominion was previously scheduled to host Wake Forest on Saturday, Sept. 5, 2020, but the game was canceled due to the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.
The Monarchs will now host the Demon Deacons at Kornblau Field at S.B. Ballard Stadium in Norfolk, Va., on Saturday, Sept. 16, 2023. The game will be the second of a home-and-home series that now begins at Truist Field in Winston-Salem, N.C., on Friday, Sept. 3, 2021.
“We are excited to be able to bring another ACC opponent to S.B. Ballard Stadium,” ODU head coach Ricky Rahne said. “This is another terrific opportunity to showcase not only Old Dominion University, but all of Hampton Roads.”
The 2021 contest will mark the first-ever meeting between the two schools on the gridiron.
“Wake Forest and the entire Winston-Salem community is excited to welcome Old Dominion and their fans to Truist Field as we open the 2021 college football season on Friday, Sept. 3,” Wake Forest director of athletics John Currie said. “Dating back to last fall and all the schedule changes we underwent due to the pandemic, I am grateful for Old Dominion Director of Athletics Wood Selig’s partnership to enable our contest with ODU to move from 2020 to 2023. We look forward to heading to Virginia where many Demon Deacon alums are located bringing DEACTOWN to Norfolk!”
“Our student-athletes and staff are extremely excited to hit the field on Sept. 3 in front of Deacon Nation and the entire Winston-Salem community,” head coach Dave Clawson said. “I am very impressed with Coach Ricky Rahne’s success offensively during his time at Penn State and I have enjoyed all my interactions with him and his staff. Additionally, we look forward to traveling to Virginia where many former, current and future Demon Deacons players are from.”
With the addition of Wake Forest, Old Dominion has completed their non-conference schedule for the 2023 season. The Monarchs are scheduled to open the season at Virginia Tech on Sept. 2 and later host Buffalo on Sept. 23 and play at Liberty on Sept. 30.
Wake Forest’s 2023 non-conference slate is also set, which kicks off with back-to-back games at home against Elon on Sept. 2 and Vanderbilt on Sept. 9. The Demon Deacons also travel to play Notre Dame on Oct. 28.
Wake was previously scheduled to host Air Force on Sept. 16, 2023, so that contest will either be rescheduled for a future season or canceled.
