The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at Miami Hurricanes football game has been canceled due to COVID-19, the ACC announced on Friday.
The two schools were scheduled to meet at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla., on Saturday, Dec. 19. The game was canceled because Georgia Tech informed the ACC that they “…will not be able to meet several of the ACC Medical Advisory Group’s COVID-19 game discontinuation considerations.”
“This afternoon, we informed Miami and the ACC that based on today’s medical report from chief medical officer Dr. Angelo Galante, it would not be in the best interests of our student-athletes for us to attempt to play a game next Saturday,” Georgia Tech director of athletics Todd Stansbury said.
“As always, the health and safety of our student-athletes is our top priority,” Stansbury continued. “We felt that it was only right to let Miami and the ACC know as early as possible, and we appreciate their understanding.”
Georgia Tech closes out the regular-season 3-7 overall and 3-6 in conference action. The Yellow Jackets are not likely to be selected for a bowl game, but they will mull it over if asked.
Should the opportunity to accept an invitation to a bowl game arise, Georgia Tech will determine at that time if the health and safety of its student-athletes will allow the team to participate.
Miami, ranked 10th in the latest College Football Playoff Rankings, finishes the regular-season 8-1 overall and 7-1 in ACC action. Brett McMurphy of Stadium currently projects the Hurricanes to play in the Orange Bowl on Jan. 2 against the Texas A&M Aggies.
