The Miami Hurricanes and the Florida Atlantic Owls have scheduled a three-game football series for 2013, 2015 and 2016, the schools announced today.
The series will kick off in 2013 when Miami hosts Florida Atlantic at Sun Life Stadium on Aug. 31. The Hurricanes will then travel to face FAU in 2015 and will host the Owls again in 2016 to conclude the series.
Miami and Florida Atlantic, which are separated by only about 51 miles, have never met on the football field.
“It’s a great match-up,” said FAU head coach Carl Pelini. “Miami is a prestigious program of which we would like to emulate. It will be great for our players to challenge the names they played against in high school and for the fans to have a close away game to attend.”
After opening the 2013 season with FAU, Miami then hosts the Florida Gators on Sept. 7. Later that season, the Canes travel to face USF (Nov. 30).
FAU will also play USF in 2013, as they are slated to visit the Bulls on Sept. 14. The future schedules for the Owls include other big programs such as Alabama, Florida and Nebraska.

Miami playing AT FAU??? 20,000 seat stadium?
Their stadium is actually 30,000.
Yep, 30K now. Brand new stadium opened in 2011.

Regardless of how big or small the stadium is, it’s only fair that the bigger teams go to the small school’s stadium. Kudos for Miami for doing that. Just like how Arizona went to Toledo 2 years ago.
Agreed, the 2 for 1 is a good deal here.
I don’t have a problem playing at FAU, even it being a smaller stadium. Miami needs to schedule some Florida/Georgia teams for recruiting its base. 2013 is going be great, FAU home, Florida home, and at USF. All Florida schools, prefect for recruiting its base. A big problem lurking is we have 5 out of conference schools scheduled in 2015. When we only have 3 slots. Games: at Toledo, Nebraska, at Memphis, Cincinnati, and at Florida Atlantic. I would say get rid of Toledo and Cincinnati. I would also get rid of the home Toledo in 2016 to get down to 3 OOC games for both years. Nothing against Toledo, it just doesn’t work for Miami. Miami already will play ACC road games north, no need to play random OOC games up north. More USF, UCF, FAU, maybe FIU, and if Florida would actually play us again beyond the 2013 game.
The ACC, as of this writing, decided upon an eight-game conference schedule…so if that stands, UM only has to cancel (or move to another season) one OOC game in 2015. Since both Memphis and Cincinnati plan to be in the Big East for ’15 — and Cincy is a one-game deal — look for that contest to get bumped. My guess is that any of the FAU games can be shifted a year or two, if needed. FIU and UM are not really cordial to one another these days – especially after the brawl at the 2005 game. Florida has said (whether true, who knows) its program must have seven home dates annually to be profitable. Translation: they’re not likely to schedule a home-and-away series with non-conference teams — and though UM has agreed to unbalanced contracts with UF in the past, the ‘Canes want to be treated as equals. And – provided Notre Dame sticks with its quasi-ACC status, playing 5 conference teams yearly, UM should gain from that exposure every second or third season.
