Vanderbilt has been asked to alter their 2012 schedule to open the season against the South Carolina Gamecocks, The Tennesseean has reported.
The game would be played on Thursday, August 30 at Vanderbilt Stadium in Nashville and would likely be televised nationally by ESPN.
“This was an SEC request,” Vanderbilt Vice Chancellor of Athletics David Williams said. “They really wanted us to play South Carolina on that first weekend.”
The Commodores are currently scheduled to open the 2012 season on Sept. 1 against the Presbyterian Blue Hose. That game could be moved down the schedule or out to a future season.
Interestingly, it appears that South Carolina may have already modified their 2012 football schedule to play the game. The Gamecocks have been slated for a few years to open the season on Thursday, Aug. 30 at home against East Carolina. However, the date for this game is now listed as TBA in USC’s 2011 football media guide (page 4).
