Last month it was reported that Temple was trying to add a game at Hawaii to their 2012 football schedule, which would have given the Owls 12 games.
Today Temple announced that they have ended negotiations with Hawaii and will not face the Warriors in Honolulu this season.
“Temple University went above and beyond normal scheduling procedures in an effort to provide our student-athletes with the opportunity to play in a 12th football game this season,” said Director of Athletics Bill Bradshaw. “Unfortunately that will not be possible as our negotiations with the University of Hawaii have ended. We felt that we had an agreement in place with the University of Hawaii, but in the end its administration was unable to fulfill it due to unforeseen circumstances.”
Temple, which joined the Big East in 2012, was previously a member of the MAC and played an 8-game conference football schedule. Therefore, the Owls required only four non-conference games per season.
But with the Big East currently only having eight teams, each school plays seven conference games and can schedule up to five non-conference contests. That left Temple with a vacancy they were unable to fill when they announced their 2012 slate back in March.
The Owls are currently 3-6 on the season with games remaining at Army and home vs. Syracuse. Even if Temple wins both games and finishes 5-6, they will be ineligible for a bowl game since they have to finish at least .500.
That’s the primary reason why Temple was looking to add a game to their 2012 schedule so late in the first place. A 12th opponent would have given them the chance to qualify for a post-season bowl game.
I think Savannah St. needs a game………
I think Florida State took that game.
