Rice has postponed their 2013 football game at Wake Forest, MyFoxHouston.com has reported.
The Owls were scheduled to face the Demon Deacons at BB&T Field in Winston-Salem, NC on Sept. 7, 2013. According to Rice athletics director Rick Greenspan, a new date is “being negotiated.”
The postponement of one game on Rice’s 2013 schedule was inevitable after the Owls announced last week that they were opening the season at Texas A&M and that the Bayou Bucket with Houston would continue.
Rice is also scheduled to host Wake Forest in 2014 on a date to be announced. It’s possible the game could be pushed back if the Bayou Bucket continues past 2013.
The only other non-conference game on the 2013 schedule for Rice is a home game against Kansas on Sept. 14. The Owls were slated to travel to UTSA on Oct. 12, but the Roadrunners enters Conference USA in 2013. That game will either become a conference game or it won’t be played.
Update (5/6/12): Chron.com reports that the 2014 game has also been postponed.
Football Schedules:
Just because both are in CUSA doesn’t mean they won’t play a non-conference game. Remember that last year Colorado played Cal in a non-conference game on September 10 despite both schools being in the Pac-12 because it was scheduled before Colorado joined the Pac-12. The Rice/ UTSA could end up in a similar situation in 2013 unless CUSA asks the two of them if they can turn it into a conference game.
That was a rare occurrence.
Cal & Colorado was game 2 of the series. That is why the game had to be played
Rice-UTSA in 2013 would also be game 2 of the series. Game 1 is at Rice in 2012.
Cal-Colorado had to be played in 2011 because the schools couldn’t agree on what to do if the game was cancelled. Colorado wanted Cal to pay something for the cancellation because Cal had already had its home game in the series, and Cal wanted to pay nothing if the game was cancelled.
