The Rice Owls have added the Lamar Cardinals to their 2020 football schedule, FBSchedules.com has learned.
Rice will host Lamar at Rice Stadium in Houston, Texas on Sept. 26, 2020. The Owls will pay the Cardinals a $350,000 guarantee for the game, per a copy of the contract obtained from Lamar University via a Texas Public Information Act request.
Rice and Lamar met four times on the gridiron between 1984 and 1987, but haven’t played since then. The Owls won all four meetings.
Lamar plays in the Southland Conference in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). The Cardinals finished the 2017 season 2-9 overall and 1-8 in conference play.
The addition of Lamar tentatively completes Rice’s non-conference schedule in 2020. The Owls are slated to open the 2020 season on the road at Houston on Sept. 5, host Army on Sept. 12, and face LSU at NRG Stadium in Houston on Sept. 19.
Rice opens the 2018 season in Week Zero on Saturday, Aug. 25 at home against the Prairie View A&M Panthers.
Just out of curiosity, is that LSU game “neutral” or is it considered a Rice home game?
And when we say they are going “on the road” at Houston, we mean they are taking an arduous 6-mile journey from their campus to the UH stadium.
There are 7 FBS schools that travel a greater distance to their home stadium, including UCLA and Miami FL.
