The Old Dominion Monarchs and the Wake Forest Demon Deacons have scheduled a home-and-home football series for 2020 and 2021, both schools announced today.
In the first game of the series, Old Dominion will host Wake Forest in Norfolk, VA on Sept. 19, 2020. The Monarchs will then travel to face the Demon Deacons at BB&T Field in Winston-Salem, NC.
“It’s a good series for Wake Forest. We’ve got a large alumni base they can cater to in this area, and this is a talent-rich area for high school football,” ODU athletic director Wood Selig told The Virginian-Pilot.
“And we’re in Conference USA, a very solid FBS league with a great television presence,” Selig said. “The visiting team doesn’t control the TV rights but knows they’re going to get some great national TV exposure.”
Old Dominion now has three ACC teams scheduled to visit Norfolk in the future. In addition to Wake Forest, the Monarchs host NC State in 2015 and Virginia Tech in 2018, 2022, and 2024.
The Demon Deacons are the first announced non-conference opponent for Old Dominion for both the 2020 and 2021 seasons.
“This is another exciting match-up that we are looking forward to vs. the ACC. Wake Forest is improving under first year Head Coach Dave Clawson. I have known Dave since his days at Villanova and followed his head coaching career at Fordham, Richmond and Bowling Green,” ODU Head Coach Bobby Wilder said. “He has consistently built winning programs and I have no doubt in my mind they will be a winning program when we play them in 2020 and 2021. We will continue to build a strong non-conference schedule that our players and 12th Monarchs will be excited about.”
Wake Forest now has four non-conference games tentatively scheduled for the 2020 season. The Deacons are also scheduled to host Appalachian State (Sept. 12), Notre Dame (date TBA), and Tulane (date TBA).
Old Dominion is the first known non-league opponent for Wake Forest for 2021.
