The Ohio State Buckeyes have added the San Diego State Aztecs to their 2013 football schedule, the school announced today.
Ohio State will host San Diego State at Ohio Stadium on Sept. 7, 2013. The two schools met three times in the early 2000’s and the Buckeyes came away with the win in each contest.
“San Diego State has a fine football program and we are happy to be able to add them to our schedule,” OSU director of athletics Gene Smith said. “We have had an excellent relationship with SDSU over the years with three exciting, competitive games since 2001.”
With the addition of the SDSU game on Sept. 7, Ohio State has moved their home contest against Florida A&M to Sept. 21. Buffalo occupied the Sept. 21 position on OSU’s schedule and has been moved to the season opener on Aug. 31.
The Vanderbilt Commodores had been set to be Ohio State’s 2013 season opener, but the Commodores backed out last month via a letter.
“We are very appreciative that Buffalo and Florida A&M had some flexibility and were open to changing game dates,” Smith said.
Ohio State’s other non-conference game, which remains unchanged, is a Sept. 14 trip to take on the California Golden Bears.
In Big Ten play, the Buckeyes will host Wisconsin, Iowa, Penn State, and Indiana and will travel to Northwestern, Purdue, Illinois, and Michigan.

Nice recovery for the Buckeyes on short notice. Probably only a lateral move, but it doesn’t further hurt an OOC schedule that was weak to begin with.
Better than Savannah State
actually pete i would say that adding s.d. state is a bump considering how they have been the last few years. but just glad as a buckeyes fan to see them trying to bump the schedule up. i am all for a cupcake or 2 but not 3 out of four. i say i hard game, 1 probably 2 bcs league teams and 1 cupcake is how it should go. i understand the mac teams in ohio and spreading the wealth but i hate those games.
Osu is now going to play a fcs school. Oh boy!

New to college football, aren’t you Matt?
I know SDSU is actually a BCS team next year, but I feel like we would have done better.
OSU has always played a ridiculously weak non-conference schedule – save a few seasons when the played Miami, Oklahoma and Florida State. They need to beef it up!!!
Really??? Texas, USC, and Miami(FL) are weak HUH? That’s the last 6 seasons there bud! GTF outta here!
The last time Ohio State played Florida State in the regular season was back in 1981 and 1982 and the Buckeyes lost both games in Columbus.
Ohio State schedules are always a joke.
The teams thwt Ohio State played this year have lost a total of 65 gamems so far. Real powerhouse!!!!!!!
Buckeye fans, remember San Diego State was a 32 point underdog in 2003. SDSU was going in for a score on the last play of the 3rd quarter with the 3rd string quarterback for what would have been a 20 – 9 lead. The pass was intercepted and a 100 yard run back gave OSU a 16 -13 victory. No scoring in the 4th quarter. San Diego State is a game player. Don’t ‘dis’ them you may regret it.
ps. I was one of only 3 fans for SDSU that day so you certainly had a home field advantage 99,997 – 3
With the new BCS set-up, playoff system and emphasis on strength of Schedule, Ohio State will have a difficult time playing for National Championship in the years to come. Sadly, the BIG has the reputation of being a weak conference; schedules like tOSU’s 2013/2014 and of other BIG schools will not help the conference. There once was a time when the BIG was a powerhouse, but not anymore. It cannot survive on past reputation alone! tOSU should be ashamed of its 2013 schedule! Any BCS school would love to play tOSU … so much $$$ to be made, but until tOSU schedules and beats an elite SEC, PAC or a Notre Dame, it should be deemed a mediocre team, playing a mediocre schedule in a mediocre conference!
