College Football – Monday’s rewind and look forward (Oct. 22)

By Josh Adams -

NCAA football can be the most frustrating sport to watch in the world. What can look like an even, intriguing match-up going into the game can quickly progress into a blowout. Last Friday, most people would have given West Virginia and South Carolina a fighting chance in their games with Kansas State and Florida. Instead both teams were blown out of the water despite the considerable amount of talent each has on their rosters.

The common denominator that both the Gamecocks and the Mountaineers had were losing the previous week. It’s tough for a team of 18-23 year-olds to rebound and get mentally together in a week. The best coaches can coax and inspire the players to set a different goal when the national championship is out of the picture. What’s unfortunate for the SC and WVU fans is their coaches failed to get their message across. The hangover lasted two weeks, and might just last the rest of the season.

BMOC of the Week: Collin Klein, QB, Kansas State

Saturday was filled with heroic QB play with Matt McGloin leading an inspired effort by Penn State over Iowa. Also, QB Gary Nova from Rutgers lead a ferocious comeback in the 2nd half against Temple to keep Rutgers in the Top 25. They deserve credit, but did not match the day Collin Klein had against WVU: 19 for 21 passing, 3 passing TD’s, and four rushing TD’s. With this performance, Klein has assured himself Heisman consideration by outplaying Geno Smith on his own turf. K-State will have a challenge next week as Seth Doege and Texas Tech come to Manhattan to play the Wildcats.

They gave HIM a Scholarship? Cal Football Running Game

On the 30th Anniversary of “The Play”, the Golden Bears running backs really could’ve used the Stanford Marching Band as blockers against the 2012 Cardinal. California was out rushed 252-3 against Stanford in the rivalry game this year. The result ended with Stanford taking “The Stanford Axe” back to Palo Alto, while the Golden Bears might want to practice blocking and hold open tryouts for a running back before facing Utah next week.

Project Runway NCAA: Boise State

Boise debuted their black matte helmets this weekend and they are sharp. They have a red eyed silver stallion adorning them and it looked rather intimidating. Boise has never been known as a fashion trendsetter, but these helmets plus the blue turf make the Broncos one of a kind in the NCAA.

Small School, Big Time Numbers: Poppy Livers, KR, Villanova

Livers returned a punt 66 yards for a touchdown in Villanova’s win over Georgia State last Saturday. That returned punt for a TD was the first by a Villanova punt returner since 1980. Livers has returned nine punts for 118 yards this season, and will look to take another one to the promised land against Towson this Saturday.

Thursday Night Social: Clemson at Wake Forest, 7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN

Both of these ACC foes are coming off wins in conference with Clemson handling Virginia Tech and Wake holding off Virginia last Saturday. Clemson should romp over Wake at Wake, but the Demon Deacons have won 3 out of the last 5 meetings against Clemson at home. Stranger things have happened on a Thursday.
