The BYU Cougars and Southern Miss Golden Eagles have scheduled a 2014-15 home-and-home football series, the two schools announced today.
BYU will host Southern Miss at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo in 2014. In 2015, the Cougars will travel to face the Golden Eagles at M.M. Roberts Stadium in Hattiesburg Exact dates of both games were not announced.
BYU and Southern Miss have played twice and the series is tied at one game each. Southern Miss won 42-14 in 1975 in Jackson. The Cougars returned the favor in 1976, trouncing the Golden Eagles 63-19 in Provo.
Southern Miss is the seventh scheduled game for BYU in 2014. The Cougars face Hawaii (site TBA) and travel to Boise State, Georgia Tech, Texas, UCF and Utah. In 2015, BYU hosts Boise State and Utah.
The Golden Eagles now have three non-conference games scheduled for 2014 and 2015. In 2014, they host Louisiana Tech and travel to Mississippi State. In 2015, Southern Miss hosts Mississippi State and travels to Nebraska.

There are still numerous rumors about a possible BYU invitation to the Big-12 as early as 2013. Typically a program that is truly committed to being independent will have 9-10 games for 2013 firmed up by this point. Many including myself are suspicious that Tom Holmoe is firming up dates he knows BYU can keep and is trying to limit any financial losses incurred should Dan Beebe and his league school presidents hand BYU an invitation they would jump at. I think all the rumors that keep showing up on BYU fan sites are just that and many school AD’s don’t want to sign up for something that will possibly end up as a broken deal since they have theri tenticals everywhere and know BYU is a serious Big-12 possability.
The Pac 12 was stupid not to take BYU. I know the whole religion mess but BYU has a national following.
