The North Carolina Tar Heels have moved their 2028 home matchup against the North Carolina A&T Aggies to the season opener, FBSchedules.com has learned.

North Carolina had previously been scheduled to host North Carolina A&T on September 16, 2028, a contest we reported back in 2023.

According to an amendment to the game contract obtained from North Carolina A&T University via a state open records request, the contest has been shifted forward and will now be played on August 26, 2028, at Kenan Memorial Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C.

The date adjustment aligns with the NCAA’s June decision to adopt a uniform 14‑week regular season beginning in 2028. Under the new model, FBS programs may begin most seasons during what is currently known as Week Zero—the weekend before Labor Day—which will become the standard Week 1.

The Tar Heels and Aggies have met just once on the gridiron, a 52–14 North Carolina win in Chapel Hill back in 2015.

North Carolina’s remaining non‑conference slate in 2028 features a home matchup with Kennesaw State on Sept. 9, leaving one open date still to be filled.

North Carolina A&T, meanwhile, will visit North Carolina Central on Sept. 2, host Tennessee State on Sept. 9, and travel to Morgan State on Sept. 30.
