LSU, Tulane could meet at Superdome in 2013

The LSU Tigers and the Tulane Green Wave are in discussions for a possible game at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in 2013, The Times Picayune has reported.

The game could be the season opener for both schools, although details are still being worked out. The two schools, separated by only about 80 miles, haven’t met since a 42-0 LSU win in 2009. The Tigers lead the overall series 69-22-7.

LSU and Tulane previously had a 10-year contract, but the Tigers canceled the deal in order to gain flexibility in their future scheduling. That resulted in LSU facing North Carolina in the 2010 Chick-fil-A College Kickoff game.

At the time of the cancellation, LSU senior associate athletics director Verge Ausberry said that the Tigers were attempting to schedule a game with Tulane in 2013. That stipulation was part of the cancellation agreement.

If the game is to occur, there will have to be some resolution on the future SEC scheduling format. LSU already has three non-conference games slated for 2013: TCU (9/7), UAB (9/14), Furman (10/26). The Tigers can add a fourth non-conference game if the SEC stays with an 8-game conference schedule, which is likely at least for the next couple of years.

Tulane is slated to host South Alabama on Sept. 7 and travel to ULM on Sept. 14. With Conference USA and the Mountain West set to merge in 2013, those schools will likely play three non-conference games per season.
