Fresno State, Nevada accept Mountain West Conference invitations

After news came that BYU was planning to become an independent in football and join the WAC for all other sports, the Mountain West made a move by inviting WAC members Fresno State and Nevada to join in 2011.

The Fresno State Bulldogs will have to pay a $5 million buyout to the WAC for leaving, under the terms reached after Boise State planned to leave. Nevada never signed the agreement, leaving the Wolf Pack free to leave without a penalty.

With Boise State, Nevada and Fresno State leaving the WAC to join the Mountain West, the WAC is now down to six teams. Under NCAA rules, leagues must contain eight teams.
