Vanderbilt has canceled its future road game against NC State, according to a report from The Wolfpacker.
The Commodores and Wolfpack were slated to begin a home-and-home series this Saturday at FirstBank Stadium in Nashville, Tenn., a matchup originally scheduled back in 2015. That game will now stand alone, as Vanderbilt has opted out of the return trip to Carter‑Finley Stadium on Sept. 16, 2028.
Per terms of the original contract, obtained through a previous public records request, Vanderbilt will owe NC State a $1 million cancellation fee.
The programs have met three times: in 1946, the 2012 Music City Bowl, and the 2016 Independence Bowl. Vanderbilt leads the all‑time series, 2–1.
To fill the newly vacated 2028 date, Vanderbilt has scheduled a home‑and‑home series with Virginia. The Commodores will host the Cavaliers on Sept. 16, 2028, and travel to Charlottesville in 2031.
Vanderbilt’s 2028 non‑conference slate also includes home games against Tennessee State (Sept. 2) and Akron (Sept. 23).
NC State, meanwhile, is down to two non‑conference opponents in 2028: road trips to East Carolina on Sept. 2 and Appalachian State on Sept. 30.

It's pretty slimy for Vanderbilt to cancel the game at NC State only a few days before the game between the two teams in Nashville.
Given this track record, Virginia may have made a mistake by agreeing to a two-game series with Vanderbilt in which the first game is to be played at Vanderbilt. What's to stop Vandy from pulling the same slimy stunt of canceling the game at Virginia only a few days before the game in Nashville?
NC State is getting a million dollars. They'll survive.
It's due to the 5 home/4 away scheduling imbalance. In even years, Vandy has five SEC road games, so that's why they canceled and added Virginia at home.
