Report: Notre Dame to host UMass in 2015

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish will host the UMass Minutemen in 2015, Gazette.net has reported.

The contest could reunite Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly and UMass head coach Charley Molnar. Molnar was Kelly’s offensive coordinator at Notre Dame in 2010 and 2011.

The contract reportedly calls for one game at South Bend. The game will be the first ever meeting between the two schools.

Notre Dame’s tentative 2015 football schedule already has 12 games. If the UMass game is added, one of the current games will have to be moved or canceled. A likely candidate is Temple, who joins the Big East this season and may be looking to trim down their non-conference slate.

Pittsburgh and Syracuse may also be looking to get out of their game with Notre Dame in 2015. Both schools are joining the ACC, which will then play a 9-game conference schedule.

As it stands now, the Fighting Irish have a daunting slate of opponents in 2015. They host Navy, Syracuse, Texas, USC, and Wake Forest and travel to play Boston College, Michigan, Pittsburgh, Purdue, and Stanford.

For UMass, the game against Notre Dame would be their second non-conference game scheduled for 2015. The Minutemen host Vanderbilt on Oct. 29 in the final contest of their four-game home-and-home series.
