Texas Tech appears to be on the verge of unveiling the final piece of its 2027 football schedule, and the announcement could come as soon as this weekend.

Speaking on his weekly Texas Tech football radio show, Red Raiders head coach Joey McGuire indicated that the program may reveal its future power-conference non-conference opponent during FOX’s Big Noon Kickoff on Saturday. While McGuire stopped short of naming the school, his comments suggest a verbal agreement is in place to fill the final opening on Texas Tech’s 2027 slate.

The Red Raiders have already announced two of their three non-conference games for that season, with Arkansas-Pine Bluff scheduled to visit Lubbock on Sept. 4 and New Mexico set to make the trip on Sept. 18.

Under Big 12 scheduling requirements, Texas Tech must face a power-conference opponent in its remaining non-conference slot, making the upcoming announcement a significant one for the program.

The search for a replacement power opponent began after NC State canceled a previously scheduled game against Texas Tech in 2027. The Wolfpack had been slated to travel to Lubbock before the matchup was removed from the future schedules, leaving the Red Raiders in need of another Power Four opponent.

Power teams that currently do not have a power non-conference opponent next season include Arizona, Indiana, Kansas, Nebraska, Ole Miss, Oregon, TCU, Washington, USC, and West Virginia. Some teams do, however, have games scheduled against former power members Oregon State (Ole Miss) and Washington State (Arizona, Kansas, Washington).

Whoever ultimately fills that vacancy will join a challenging 2027 schedule. In conference play, Texas Tech is slated to host Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas State and Utah, while making road trips to BYU, Houston, Kansas, TCU and UCF.

With McGuire hinting that an announcement could be made on national television this weekend, Red Raider fans may get the ultimate Halloween treat.
