The UMass Minutemen have added the Rhode Island Rams to their 2021 football schedule, UMass athletic director Ryan Bamford announced on Wednesday.
Bamford announced the future matchup by tweeting a picture of the game contract.
UMass will host Rhode Island at McGuirk Alumni Stadium on Oct. 16, 2021. The game will be the 86th overall meeting between the two schools.
UMass and Rhode Island first met in 1903. In their most recent matchup in 2011, the Minutemen defeated the Rams 36-27 to extend their overall lead in the series to 47-36-2.
Rhode Island is the 10th opponent on UMass’ 2021 football schedule and second opponent from the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).
Other home opponents for UMass in 2021 include Boston College (Sept. 11), Eastern Michigan (Sept. 18), UConn (Oct. 9), and Maine (Nov. 13). The Minutemen will play at Colorado (Sept. 4), Coastal Carolina (Sept. 25), Liberty (Nov. 6), Army (Nov. 20), and New Mexico State (Nov. 27).
Rhode Island, a member of the Colonial Athletic Association in the FCS, now has four non-conference opponents scheduled for the 2021 season. One of those contests will have to be postponed or canceled because FCS teams will play 11-game schedules in 2021.
As is stands right now, Rhode Island is scheduled to play at North Texas (Sept. 4) and Brown (Oct. 2) and host Bryant (Sept. 11).
