The North Carolina Tar Heels will no longer travel to Purdue in 2027, the program announced Wednesday, formally ending the first half of a previously scheduled home‑and‑home series.
UNC had been slated to visit the Boilermakers next season in what would have been the opening game of a two‑game agreement between the schools. That matchup has been removed from the schedule following the ACC’s decision to expand to a nine‑game conference slate beginning in 2027, a move that forced several league programs to adjust previously contracted non‑conference dates.
Earlier Wednesday, the ACC released each member’s conference opponents for the 2027 season. North Carolina was assigned four home games and five road contests, hosting Duke, Florida State, Virginia, and Virginia Tech while traveling to Louisville, NC State, Stanford, Syracuse, and Wake Forest.
UNC then confirmed its non‑conference opponents, all of which are home games: North Alabama, UCF, and UConn. The Purdue game was notably absent.
The second leg of the Purdue series—scheduled for Sept. 13, 2031 in Chapel Hill—remains on the books. Whether the schools will attempt to reschedule the canceled 2027 contest or ultimately dissolve the series entirely is still unclear.
ACC programs are required to play a minimum of 10 Power‑conference opponents each season, giving North Carolina incentive to preserve the 2031 matchup.
However, with the league’s new scheduling model creating alternating years of four or five conference home games, UNC may prefer to structure future Power‑conference series so that home dates fall in seasons with heavier ACC road travel and away dates fall in seasons with more ACC home games.
