Minnesota and North Carolina were slated for a 2013-14 home-and-home series, but the Golden Gophers requested to cancel the arrangement. Minnesota will pay UNC an $800,000 buyout per the terms of the contract.
“We’re disappointed we will not have the opportunity to play Minnesota,” said UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham. “Recently, Minnesota expressed an interest in cancelling the series and we agreed to do so based on the terms of the contract.”
North Carolina has also moved their 2013 game against East Carolina to Chapel Hill. The game, still set for Sept. 28, was previously slated for Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium in Greenville. As a result of the move, the North Carolina will travel to ECU in 2014. The two schools will also meet in Greenville in either 2016 and 2018.
The Tar Heels have also scheduled a home game against the Old Dominion Monarchs for Oct. 12, 2013. ODU is set to join Conference USA in 2015, but will play as an FCS Independent in 2013.
UNC needs one more non-conference game in 2013 and three games in 2014.
